How to care for your jewels

General Care

Jewellery should be carefully stored in protective packaging to prevent rubbing, scratching and tangling with other items in your jewellery box. Do not wear Jewellery in the swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna/steam or while bathing or showering. Chlorine, detergents, oils and perfumes can all cause tarnishing and damage. If your piece does get wet, ensure that it is dried properly before storing. Moisture fosters tarnish on metals and can weaken springs and clasps. Protect jewellery from extremes of temperature in particular do not leave pieces exposed to bright sunlight for extended periods of time. The sun may fade some gemstones or finishes

Luke-warm water with a small amount of mild dishwashing detergent. Rinse with cold water to remove any traces of detergent and dab dry with a soft cloth or tissue. If necessary a soft tooth brush can be used to clean any difficult areas of deep texture. Never use alcohol, solvents, abrasive wadding or silver cleaning solutions on gold or rhodium plated jewellery.

Finishing Touches

Jewellery should be put on last or taken off first after using perfume, hair spray or make-up. Some perfumes are acidic and will cause damage to enamels and tarnish decorative plating. Costume jewellery pearls are especially vulnerable to the alcohol contained in all perfumes.
